About Attuned Counselling Cromwell

Meet Janina

I’m Janina, a counselling therapist based in Cromwell, Central Otago, offering in-person and online counselling across New Zealand.

My path to counselling has always been guided by one simple truth: I’ve always cared about people - their stories, struggles, and the way they make sense of the world.

I am a hearing therapist proficient in New Zealand Sign Language, here to support both Deaf and hearing clients.

My Connection to People & The Deaf Community

"For as long as I can remember, I’ve found purpose in supporting others - a thread that has woven through every role I’ve held throughout my career."

My work has always centred on people. From supporting those with disabilities to mentoring youth in the outdoors and teaching yoga, each experience has deepened my understanding of how connection, empathy, and trust help people grow. These experiences shaped the way I hold space today - calm, grounded, and attuned to each person’s unique story.

I was born and raised in Aotearoa New Zealand, the hearing daughter of Deaf parents. Growing up immersed in both Deaf and hearing cultures, I’ve always moved between two worlds - one visual, one spoken. That experience taught me to listen differently; to notice what’s not said, and to connect beyond words.

Fluent in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), I offer counselling for Deaf clients without the need for an interpreter. This direct communication allows clients to share openly in their own language. My published research explores mental-health therapies for the Deaf community, and my work continues to be shaped by that passion for accessibility and inclusion.

What I Can Do For You

Pluralistic Counselling

How I Work

I use a pluralistic counselling approach, which simply means there’s no one-size-fits-all method. Together, we find what feels right for you - combining evidence-based practices like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Person-Centred Therapy with Indigenous and culturally attuned perspectives.

My sessions are guided by open communication, shared decision-making, and collaboration. For me, counselling is about creating a safe, welcoming space where you can bring all parts of yourself - the strong, the uncertain, and everything in between.

I'm Here For You

Who I Support

I work with youth (12+) and adults, including mothers navigating maternal mental health, individuals experiencing anxiety, loss, or change, and members of the Deaf community seeking an attuned and accessible counselling experience.

My goal is to meet you where you’re at, helping you find clarity, confidence, and calm.

My Recent Peer Reviewed Publication

For those interested, in February 2025, I published some research co-authored with Kayleen Clark-Howard, with the Counselling Quarterly in the United Kingdom.

The research focused on the experience of mental health therapies for Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, from the perspectives of the Deaf client, mental health practitioner and sign language interpreter.

The results shared an array of information highlighting access issues, barriers to culturally attuned support, challenges with vicarious trauma for sign language interpreters and difficulties adapting therapeutic practice. Several clinical implications were suggested, all with the aim to provide further guidance to meet the cultural and linguistic needs of the Deaf.
